Dr. D. Rocco Buttiglione

He received an honorary degree in Philosophy from the Catholic University of Lublin, a PhD in Law from the University of Rome La Sapienza and an honorary doctorate from Francisco Marroquín University. He was a member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. a member of Parliament since 1994 and served as Minister of European Affairs, Minister of Culture and Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies.

He has been a Full Professor at different universities and he is currently Professor at the Instituto de Filosofía Edith Stein.  He was the Director of the Saint John Paul II Chair at the Pontifical Lateran University and Pro-rector of the International Academy of Philosophy.

He is a member of the scientific committee of the Fondazione Internazionale Giovanni Paolo II for the magistero sociale della Chiesa, member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences, Political and Moral Sciences, member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.

He is the author of numerous books and more than 100 essays, in which he has poured his conservative ideas on philosophy, religion and politics.


Academic History
  • He studied in Turin and later in Rome where he enrolled in law. His future vocation came to light and he specialized in political doctrines. He is considered an authority in this matter in Italy. He currently teaches Political Sciences at the Roman University of San Pío V.

  • He was also a professor of philosophy and acting rector at the International Academy for Philosophy in Liechtenstein.

  • Courses and Seminars: Prof. Buttiglione has held courses and seminars at the Pontifical Institute for the Family and Marriage in Rome, the University of Rome (La Sapienza), the University of Urbino, the University of Teramo, the Catholic University of Lublin and many other universities and research centres.

  • Honorary degree in Philosophy: May 1994, Lublin Catholic University, Poland.
  • Council Member of the Pontifical Commission Justitia et Pax (1984-1991).
  • Honorary Professor of Mendoza University.
  • Member of the editorial council of several Italian and international magazines.
